Casino Guards Sentenced to 4 Years for Theft

MAYS LANDING – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: ``Two former security guards have been sentenced to four-year state prison terms for their role in masterminding and executing a scheme that resulted in the theft of more than $387,000 from the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, state authorities said.

``Glen Longcrier, 45, of Pleasantville, and Daniel Lugo, 42, of Ventnor, pleaded guilty last month to one count each of theft by unlawful taking.

``Superior Court Albert Garofolo sentenced them Friday in accordance with a plea bargain and ordered each to pay $75,000 in restitution, according to state officials.

``State Police assigned to the Division of Gaming Enforcement arrested Longcrier, a security supervisor, and Lugo, a guard, on the casino floor on Jan. 28, 2001, after seeing them take money from table-game drop boxes and put it in their pockets. Police recovered $34,248, according to a DGE spokeswoman.

``…A report by Tropicana's internal audit team traced in excess of $387,000 in cash shortages that were linked to the defendants' actions, state officials said…"
