Casino Foes Challenge Supporters to Debate

21 July 2003

MAINE – As reported by the York County, Maine Journal Tribune: “Casino opponents today challenged supporters of a Sanford gambling resort to debate whether children would be allowed to gamble and work in a proposed casino.

“The group Casinos No! is suggesting a one-hour debate dealing only with the provision in the Maine Tribal Gaming Act that refers to minors. Statewide voters must approve the gaming act in November before a $650 million casino can be built in Sanford.

“Erin Lehane, spokeswoman for the pro-casino group Think About It, agreed to the debate — but with conditions.

“…The suggestion for debate on minors in the proposed casino follows comments made by former Gov. Angus King at a Casinos No! fund-raiser last week.

“King said a clause in the gaming act would allow children to play games of chance at the proposed casino, which, he said, would be akin to training a future generation of gamblers.

“…[Lehane] said the bill absolutely prohibits children near slot machines.

“…Lehane this morning said the `bazaar games’ children would be allowed to play would be `carnival-type activities,’ like skeeball and dart throwing, similar to games found at a state fair.

“And she said minors would be allowed to work in the casino in capacities not associated with gambling and liquor…”
