Casino Executives Lobby for Engram

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI – July 23, 2000 – As reported by the Sun Herald: "Several Coast businesses and casino company executives are lobbying to get Bob Engram reappointed to the Mississippi Gaming Commission when his four-year term expires in September.

"But some of them are not hopeful the lifelong Republican and political appointee of former Gov. Kirk Fordice will get the nod from new Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove.

"`I've been approached by several people who have asked if I would consider serving another term,' said Engram, who has sat on the three-member commission for seven years. `I said I would.'

"Musgrove has not indicated when he will make an appointment, and he didn't return a phone call late last week for comment.

"…Much of the support for Engram is coming from banking and finance company executives who believe regulatory stability is necessary to generate confidence in the industry by Wall Street investment bankers.

"…Engram, an executive with Stevedoring Services of America, was named director of the Gulfport Port Authority in 1970. He was given the task of rebuilding the port, which was almost destroyed six months earlier by Hurricane Camille.

"As a gaming commissioner, Engram, 79, is known largely for fathering a regulation that requires gambling companies to match their investment in their floating casinos with an equal investment in non-gambling amenities, such as hotels, restaurants, retail shops and entertainment attractions..."
