Casino Criminal Activity Falls Under California Tribal Police Jurisdiction

CALIFORNIA – July 17, 2001 –As reported by the (California) Desert Sun: "Enforcement against card cheating, embezzlement from casinos, certain drug offenses and other criminal activity soon will fall under the jurisdiction of the Cabazon Tribal Police Department.

"Wednesday, officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will deputize 17 members of the Cabazon department as federal law enforcement officers, the tribe reported Monday.

"The designation means tribal police officers will have authority to enforce a number of federal laws within the boundaries of the Indio-area reservation.

"…The new federal authority means Cabazon tribal cops will be able to investigate and arrest suspects for federal crimes ranging from Indian country liquor laws to illegal trafficking of human remains and archaeological objects to distributing illegal drugs.

"The tribe, which owns and operates Fantasy Springs Casino, also is obligated to disclose to federal authorities proof of training and background checks for its officers, said Richard Armstrong, district law enforcement commander for the BIA.

"…However, the Cabazon's police authority will be limited compared to federal and state certified tribal police in other states, [said Richard Armstrong, district law enforcement commander for the BIA.]…"
