Casino Company Waits for Edmonton Council Hearing

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the Edmonton Journal: "A company that hopes to build a new downtown casino will have to wait until next week to hear if city council supports the plan.

"Gateway Casino, which owns Baccarat Casino at the corner of 104th Avenue and 101st Street, wants to build a new casino at 104th Avenue and 104th Street. It would be triple the size of the Baccarat Casino, which would close.

"The challenge for councillors Wednesday was to discuss the principle of more gambling downtown, without focusing on the specifics of the casino's design.

"…Gateway Casinos, which operates several casinos in Vancouver and the Palace Casino at West Edmonton Mall, bought the building and the 4.5 hectares of surrounding land last June.

"Should Gateway get approval for the new casino, the company will have to return to the city for zoning approval…"
