Casino Career Institute Celebrates 25 Years

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Lawrence Winchell remembers how appalled some people were at the proposal to have then Atlantic Community College open a school to train casino dealers.

"Twenty-five years later, the Casino Career Institute, or CCI, has trained about 46,000 students and spread its influence to gaming venues as far away as Macao.

"`Some people were aghast that a college would get involved with gaming,' Winchell, former president of the college, said at a reception Monday kicking off the 25th anniversary celebration of the institute.

"…CCI opened in 1978 in the college's Atlantic City Center, teaching students on a mock casino floor that simulated their future job sites.

"Michael Fedorko, vice chairman of the Casino Control Commission, said that until the institute opened, casinos simply trained their own employees.

"…State Sen. William Gormley, R-Atlantic, said the goal of the casino legislation was to both rehabilitate Atlantic City and to generate jobs, and that the college has helped to achieve that mission.

"…Times were not always booming for the CCI. A few years ago when deregulation allowed dealers to get jobs without a formal training certificate, enrollment dropped off.

"…The institute also does customized training for other gaming venues and hosts national seminars such as October's Police Officer Gaming Seminar that addresses issues security specific to gaming such as spotting cheaters…"
