Casino Advocate: Casinos are Fuel for Economy

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut - When Robert S. Stone thinks of casinos, he pictures a great real estate market, new jobs and fuel for the local economy.

"`Casinos are sprouting up all over America, and they are thriving and helping the areas they are in,' Stone, a District 6 Democrat on the Representative Town Meeting, said early Tuesday. `Let's not look at casinos as just a gambling hall, but as fuel for our economy.'

"…`Casinos create jobs and economic development,' Stone said. `Let's get in on the action before it's too late.'

"Stone's pro-casino plea failed to convince many fellow RTM members, who voted 27 to 3 early Tuesday to spend $15,000 to fight the possibility of more casinos in Connecticut.

"The $15,000 is Fairfield's share toward the Lower Fairfield County Coalition's drive to prevent a third casino from being built in Connecticut.

"The coalition is hiring Washington, D.C., lawyers with the firm Perkins Coie to monitor tribal recognition requests pending before the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs…"
