Casino advertising on anti-gambling campaigner's web site

11 January 2001

The website of state Community Services Minister and anti-gambling campaigner Christine Campbell has links to Casino on Net, an online casino based in the West Indies. The web site, created by a volunteer, also carries banner advertisements for major gambling site, Gamesville that offering games such as "Miami poker", "big easy blackjack" and "bonus ball bingo". Casino on Net features video poker, roulette and slot machines that allow users to accumulate points that can be converted to cash. The volunteer, who created the site, hosted the site with US-based Internet service provider Tripod for free in return for placing banner ads on the homepage. Tripod carries a disclaimer for the random ads where recipients are unable to choose the content of ads and cannot pay to remove them. Campbell, a fervent anti-gambling campaigner, launched a massive anti-gambling campaign last year. The campaign features graphic portrayals of compulsive gamblers causing emotional and financial distress to family. Liberal MP Peter Katsambanis expressed his shock when he saw the gambling ads. He said children visiting parliamentary websites could be exposed to gambling. “It is sending a terrible message, especially since Christine Campbell is responsible for problem gambling in Victoria," he stated. The Federal Government has imposed a 12-month Internet gambling moratorium, sparking fears this could drive people on to unsafe foreign sites. Campbell''s spokesman, Tim Winkler, said the site would be shut down and would only be relaunched once the online casino advertising had been removed and links had been added to information about problem gambling.
