Cash in, England4 October 2001From this Saturday, gamblers will be able to place more bets for less. The current 9 percent tax taken from punters will be replaced by a 15 percent tax on bookmakers’ gross profits. Ladbrokes was among many who expressed their delight at the scrapping of the betting duty, stating that the industry is now set for a golden age. Some of the first to cash in on the change will be punters putting their money down on Saturday''s England world cup qualifier. The move, abolishing the duty that was introduced just before England’s World Cup victory in 1966, combined with the growing popularity of sports betting, will ensure that more money will be bet on the World Cup 2002 than for any other major tournament to date. |
