Card Marking Scam Uncovered in South Africa

8 May 1999

Authorities in South Africa are investigating a gambling scam in which playing cards were allegedly marked at the printers.

According to casino and police officials, the supplier of cards to South African casinos issued decks with the backs of high cards slightly altered.

The Associated Press reports that cheaters managed to cost the Caesar's casino $333,000 over 19 days last month. Global Resorts CEO Ernie Joubert claims that the same scheme, nationwide, could cost the industry about $8.3 million a year. (Global Resorts is part owner of the Caesar's casino.

The company that supplied the cards, Protea Playing Cards, provides cards for all 22 of South Africa's casinos as well as other casinos in southern Africa. The company has offered its full cooperation with investigations.

As of now, it's unclear who was behind the operation.
