Canterbury Park Season Opener Set for This Saturday

17 May 2000

SHAKOPEE, Minn., May 16 (Press Release) -- The 2000 live race meet at Canterbury Park begins Saturday, May 20, with a 59-day race meet, which will run through Labor Day. First post for the season opener is 1:30 p.m. and will feature the 13th running of the $30,000 Lady Slipper Stakes for fillies and mares.

The summer race meet has been extended this year through Labor Day thanks to the highly successful 1999 race meet, in which Canterbury Park enjoyed its best season in attendance and wagering since purchasing the old Canterbury Downs in 1994.

The optimism for continued success this year has increased even more dramatically since the Canterbury Card Club opened on April 19. A percentage of the revenues from the Card Club is dedicated to horse racing purses and breeding incentives for those who raise thoroughbreds and American Quarter Horses in Minnesota.

The racetrack expects a full house (no pun intended) on the Canterbury backside with more than 1800 horses scheduled to stable here this summer. Higher quality racing and full fields are expected throughout the season.

Highlights of this year's meet include the $100,000 Canterbury Breeders Cup Derby on June 19, the second running of the national Claiming Crown championship on August 6, and the Minnesota Festival of Champions August 20th. More than $2.5 million in purses will be distributed this summer.

Opening day is also the running of the Preakness Stakes where Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus is expected to win the second leg of the Triple Crown as the 1-5 favorite. Many say the three-year-old son of Mr. Prospector is the next Secretariat and the colt's first five performances have been nothing short of awesome. Opening day will also feature a $5,000 handicapping tournament.

The grand opening party for the Canterbury Card Club is slated for June 2-4th, and will feature poker 101 and a seminar on poker conducted by the world's authority on poker, Mike Caro.

General admission to Canterbury is $4, with upgrades to the Club House and Restaurant. There is never admission to the Canterbury Card Club. General parking is free. Valet parking is $5. Reservations for the Canterbury restaurant are advised. For reservations and tickets, call 952-445-7224.
