Canoncito Navajos Win Gambling Endorsement27 July 2000TO'HAJIILEE, NEW MEXICO -- July 27, 2000 – As reported by Associated Press: "The Navajo Nation Council has agreed to casino-style gambling for the Canoncito Band of Navajos west of Albuquerque. "The council, voting 57-12 in Window Rock, Ariz., last week, passed a resolution giving the Canoncito Band the right to pursue a gaming compact with the state of New Mexico. The resolution also amends the Navajo Nation Code to decriminalize gaming `if done pursuant' to a gaming compact. "…To'hajiilee Chapter economic planner Jim Platero said 6.5 million vehicles pass the area off Interstate 40 each year, and the casino also could draw customers from the Albuquerque metropolitan area, about 25 miles to the east. "Platero is helping develop the site's master plan, which calls for a casino-hotel, convention center, truck stop and golf course near a planned I-40 exit eight miles east of the Rio Puerco. "The venture would require outside investment of $30 million to $40 million to keep up with casino projects by surrounding tribes, Platero said. Isleta Pueblo, on Albuquerque's southern edge, and Sandia Pueblo, north of the city, have casinos, as does Laguna Pueblo, only a few miles from To'hajiilee..." |
