Canadian Province to Study Gambling-Related Suicides1 August 2001NEW BRUNSWICK, Canada – August 1, 2001 – As reported by the CBC: ``The New Brunswick government will take a closer look this fall at new suicide statistics linked to gambling in the province. ``The figures show 12 problem gamblers in New Brunswick killed themselves in the past five years. ``The mother of one suicide victim says the government is low-balling the figures. ``Sandy Bishop's 32 year old son Eric committed suicide three years ago to escape his addiction to video lottery gambling. ``She and her husband believe there are many more such cases, and they personally know of at least 15. ``The government says their numbers were compiled from coroners' statements and police reports. But Bishop says it's obvious the number is higher..." |
