Canadian Health Minister Ignored VLT Warnings3 February 2003NOVA SCOTIA, Canada -- As reported by the Daily News: ``Former health minister Jamie Muir ignored warnings that new video-lottery terminals, introduced in 2001, are more addictive than the old model, the Opposition charges. ``…In a March 2002 memo leaked to CBC Radio, the Health Department's addiction gambling services co-ordinator, John LaRocque, informed Muir that the new machines were likely to substantially increase the number of VLT players, and players who were not problem gamblers were at high risk of becoming problem gamblers. ``…In the spring of 2001, the province introduced 3,200 new VLTs meant to slow and interrupt play. The new features included clocks, so people know what time it is; a pop-up reminder that tells them how long they've been playing; and a mandatory cash-out after they have played for a prescribed period of time…" |
