Canadian Gambled Senior's Savings Away

CANADA -- As reported by the Regina Leader: ``A Dysart man with a gambling addiction who defrauded an ailing 88-year-old Regina woman of most of her retirement savings is going to jail.

``On Tuesday, Court of Queen's Bench Justice Ronald Barclay sentenced Kenneth C. Gibson, 45, to a year behind bars, calling his behaviour "despicable."

``…Gibson pleaded guilty to fraud last month. Court heard that Gibson befriended the woman in 1998.

``Between March 1, 1998 and Feb. 9, 2001, Gibson made numerous requests to the woman for loans, saying he needed the money to operate his company and buy equipment.

``After she paid him, he spent the money gambling on VLTs.

``…Even after police charged Gibson with fraud, he continued to take money from her. In total, $77,500 was taken and none of the money was paid back…"
