Canadian Casino Vows to Battle Union in Supreme Court2 February 2001PRINCE ALBERT, Saskatchewan –Feb. 2, 2001 –As reported by the CBC: " A native-run casino will ask the Supreme Court of Canada to hear its challenge of a union certification. "The union at the Northern Lights casino in Prince Albert was certified under provincial law, but according to the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA), native casinos are a federal responsibility and should be governed by the Canadian labor code. "…The union maintains SIGA is not really concerned about which labour code applies. Rather, the Canadian Auto Workers says the casino is challenging the union because it does not want to pay decent wages…" |
