Canadian Bingo Addicts Can Ask to be Barred

CANADA -- As reported by the (Vancouver) Province: ``B.C. bingo addicts are now the first in North America who can get themselves voluntarily barred from bingo halls.

``Gail White, director of corporate social responsibility for the B.C. Lottery Corp., said the `self-exclusion' program is being expanded from the province's 19 casinos to include 37 bingo halls.

```Some people have a very severe problem with bingo,' she said. 'There is less money on the table but it can be very addictive for some people.'

``Under the program, a person who feels they have a problem can phone the lottery corporation and a security officer will visit them.

``The gambling addict fills in a form and has their photograph taken.

``That information and mugshot is then distributed to every casino or bingo hall and if the person tries to enter, they will be refused or escorted out if spotted by staff.

``…Since the B.C. Lottery Corp. took over casinos in June 1998 and brought in the self-exclusion program, 800 people have signed up, she said…"
