Canada Post Gambles on Lottery Tickets

MONCTON, Canada – Dec. 14, 2001 –As reported by the CBC: "Canada Post is taking a gamble on lottery tickets. The items are now on sale at some postal outlets in Atlantic Canada. The corporation is hoping the tickets will bring in more profits.

"Fifty-five outlets are participating. Next to the stamps and coins will be scratch and win tickets.

"…Canada Post says it needs to make more money and customers may notice the outlets are a little flashier these days.

"…Consumers say they like the convenience.

"…Postal outlets across the country are all trying new things. In Newfoundland, you can get your fishing licence where and bank where you buy stamps. Other outlets sell cell phones. But not everyone is applauding the move.

"`The post office is a Crown corporation and it's government-funded,' says Lester Scott who owns a convenience store. `Basically they're stepping in areas that are traditionally served by the business sector of the community.'…"
