Camelot Wins First Round

29 August 2000

UNITED KINGDOM –Aug. 29 , 2000 – As reported by The BBC News: "Lottery operator Camelot has got the go-ahead for a High Court judicial review of last week's decision to rule it out of the running for the National Lottery.

"The National Lottery Commission excluded the lottery operator from a second round of negotiations on the seven-year contract to run the lottery from 2001.

"…But Justice Elias refused to stop negotiations between the National Lottery Commission and its preferred bidder, the People's Lottery, continuing in the meantime.

"Justice Elias rejected a Camelot request for the NLC to reopen negotiations with the lottery operator to clarify what the problems were.

"…The NLC, in explaining its decision last week to reject Camelot, reported grave concerns over the behaviour of GTech, the firm which provides the technology behind the lottery.

"…It emerged over the weekend that the supplier of software to the People's Lottery's bid has been fined more than £1m for problems suffered by US state lotteries using its equipment.

"…Both bidders for the lottery pledged to raise £15bn for good causes over the next seven years of the new lottery license from October 2001.

"But the People's Lottery said it would also forego any profits in order to return more money to the public…"
