Camelot To Sue Over British lottery decision28 August 2000LONDON – Aug. 28, 2000 – As reported by The Bloomberg News: "Camelot Group Plc said it would take legal action, after the United Kingdom's National Lottery Commission this week rejected its bid to run the national lottery. "The commission two days ago spurned bids from Camelot and The People's Lottery Ltd., headed by Virgin Group Ltd.-founder Richard Branson, for a seven-year license "…The National Lottery Commission had said on Wednesday that it "remains extremely concerned" about `GTECH's culture and conduct.' GTECH took two years to tell the commission about a software glitch that duplicated some winning tickets, meaning ticket holders only got half their winnings. GTECH announced in last month that it had replaced chairman William O'Connor, because of the software glitch. "…Denying Camelot the same chance as the commission is giving Branson `is totally unfair,' said Camelot chief executive Diane Thompson. "`I think Camelot should consider forgetting going to courts, bowing out gracefully and letting the People's Lottery get on with the job,' Branson said in an interview broadcast on Sky News." |
