Calumet City Wants to be Second to Rosemont

6 August 2002

CALUMET CITY, Illinois – As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: "A peace pipe over a gambling chip has become Calumet City's campaign logo in its quest to become the state's `second choice' behind Rosemont for a casino.

"The symbol is appropriate because Calumet is an American Indian word for the peace pipe, says Mayor Dominick Gigliotti.

"Well, actually, it's a French word used by early explorers to describe the pipe--but that's not stopping the south suburb from puffing up its campaign for a casino.

"Calumet City boosters claim that giving the town a casino license will bring peace to a gaming board that has been embattled ever since it voted to strip the license from Emerald Casino, which would have opened in Rosemont.

"…But don't count on Rosemont's Mayor Don Stephens to share a peace pipe with anyone soon…"
