Calls Increasing to Problem Gambling Center

17 December 2001

APPLETON, Wisconsin – Dec. 17, 2001 -- The Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling expects that its 5-year-old helpline will receive a record number of calls this year.

Since its inception in 1996, the helpline has received a steadily rising number of calls, reaching an all-time high of 5,052 in 2000. Officials expect another record in 2001.

"I'd be surprised if we didn't break (the record)," said Rose Gruber, executive director of the Green Bay-based agency. It was launched in 1993 to provide assistance to state residents with gambling problems.

Through November, a total of 4,610 calls had been made to the helpline.

Gruber said December calls have been heavier than usual.

"Usually, it slows down during the holidays, but we haven't seen it," Gruber said.
