Calling All Computer Junkies17 July 1997If you're interested in the tech part of casino gaming, you may want to check out GameTech, a conference which offers a wealth of information on "strategic computing for the gaming industry." It will be held August 12-14 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and is brought to you by International Gaming and Wagering Business (IGWB.com) which offers the World Gaming Congress. The conference will include tracks on: tools & techniques; best practices and applied technology. It's keynote speaker is Jeff Friedberg, Vice President of Engineering at Silicon Gaming who will talk about "Plug and Play - Casino of the Future." In a release about the keynote address, IGWB said, "The ability to buy a new PC peripheral, plug it in, and have it running in minutes has been key to the explosive growth of the computer industry. 'Plug and play' frees customers from single-vendor solutions, allows them to select the best price-performance option, and provides a flexible upgrade path. What will it take to make gaming devices 'plug and play' within a casino environment? What should an operator do to fully leverage the next generation of wagering devices? What role will multimedia play? What is the gaming industry doing about its future?" This plenary session will explain the latest multimedia techniques that enable "plug and play" capabilities within the casino. It will also demonstrate multimedia applications ranging from slot machines to location-based entertainment. Jeffrey Friedberg, Vice President of Engineering at Silicon Gaming, leads the development team that created the Odyssey(TM), a new multimedia slot machine. He is also Acting Chair of the Gaming Manufacturers Association (GAMMA), which defines network communication standards between gaming devices and back-office systems. Other workshops include " The Games of Tomorrow: Where Will Technology Take Us?" by Steven Weiss, Chairman Casino Data Systems. A description of that session offers, "The days of springs and reels are a distant memory, with video-based and multi-player games well established norms today. What will today's current and emerging technologies offer for the next generation of games? An industry expert looks forward and discusses how emerging parimutuel games, 3D, interactive play and virtual reality are likely to shape the games of tomorrow and how the gaming industry may evolve."
