California's Smallest Casino Ready to Open17 May 2002LA JOLLA INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "The La Jolla Indian band has big hopes riding on California's smallest casino. "The North County tribe's 30-machine `slot arcade' is scheduled to open 8 a.m. Tuesday. It is the ninth tribal gaming venue in San Diego County and a fraction of the others' size. The casino occupies a 15-by-40-foot section of a minimarket on state Route 76 near Palomar Mountain. "…La Jolla is counting on piggybacking its slot business on its nearby campground, water slide and go-cart track. The 2,400-acre campground alone draws thousands of summer customers. Well over 3,000 are expected over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, which is why crews are hustling to get the slot room up and running before then. "…The 700-member La Jolla band invested nearly $500,000 of its own money – including its allocation of revenue-sharing funds from other gaming tribes – to construct the slot arcade and stock it with a variety of machines. "…La Jolla tribe officials expect the arcade will attract drop-in players from among the hundreds of cars, motorcycles and motor homes that travel the highway daily through the reservation. But the campground will probably bring most of the slot business, Magante said…" |
