Californian Man Pleads Guilty in Alteration of Money Orders25 July 2001MODESTO, California -- July 24, 2001 -- As reported by the Fresno Bee: ``A Modesto man pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he altered and cashed postal money orders and illegally pocketed more than $200,000. ``…Postal Inspector Efren Santos, who is assigned to Fresno, said at the time of the indictment that Hunter would buy $100 money orders at post offices, change the amount to $600, then travel from San Diego to Sacramento and use the altered money orders to purchase American Express travelers checks at various travel agencies. ``Hunter allegedly spent the travelers checks on a number of luxury items and gambling trips to Las Vegas, Reno and Indian gaming casinos, including Table Mountain near Fresno, according to Santos. ``Robert E. Coyle Coyle (U.S. District Judge) set Nov. 5 for sentencing and allowed Hunter to remain free on bond until then. ``…He also was arrested by Modesto police earlier this year and accused of using counterfeit cashiers checks to purchase airline and Amtrak tickets, which he later turned in for cash refunds…" |
