California Tribes Win More Time to Install Slots

CALIFORNIA –– As reported by the (Santa Rosa)Press Democrat: "The state won't enforce a May 15 deadline for Indian tribes -- including Sonoma County's Dry Creek Pomos -- to begin using slot machines on their reservations, according to the head of Gov. Gray Davis' gambling commission.

"John Hensley, who chairs the state Gambling Control Commission, said the tribes will have at least another year to begin operating slot machines allotted them in a May 2000 drawing.

"Under an agreement with the state, the tribes risked losing the gambling machines if they failed to start using them within a year of the date they were allocated. A number of California tribes opened new casinos or expanded existing ones in recent months to meet the deadline.

"But Dry Creek and several other tribes will miss the deadline because they haven't finished building their casinos.

"…The commission met Wednesday in Sacramento and discussed the slot machine issue but didn't take final action. Commission staffer Gary Qualset said the agency is taking no action against tribes that fail to meet the May 15 deadline…"
