California Tribes To Hold Gaming Forum

PALM SPRINGS, California – Oct. 26, 2000 –As reported by The Desert Sun: "Representatives from the most powerful American Indian tribes in California and the nation will gather today in Palm Springs to discuss funding their collective agenda. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) is expected to ask its 62 member tribes to pony up about $800,000 for operating expenses in the upcoming year.

"…Goals: The organization formed in 1993 to represent the interests of gaming tribes in California and Nevada, but has since dropped the Nevada affiliation and now counts at least 27 California tribes without casinos among its ranks.

" …`As little as five years ago, California tribes were given little respect, little attention and had little impact on social policy,' said [Phillip] Isenberg, a former Sacramento mayor and longtime assemblyman who now works as a lobbyist for the Alliance of California Tribes, a small coalition of 10 tribes that deals with non-gaming issues.

"…Cabazon Chief Executive Officer Mark Nichols said smaller coalitions and individual tribes are the most effective vehicles for specific issues. But he said CNIGA works best as a tool for building consensus among tribes on a myriad of gaming issues…"
