California Tribe Wants to Replace Casino Sign

29 July 2003

PALM SPRINGS, California – As reported by the Desert Sun: “Five years after putting in a controversial Las Vegas-style sign at the Spa Resort Casino, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians wants to replace it with a slightly smaller sign that features a video screen.

“The resort’s now signature neon sign at Indian Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way was built in 1998 to the chagrin of some residents who said it ruined downtown’s charm.

“At 30 feet high, the proposed sign would be about a foot shorter than the current one and would feature a muted blue versus the current turquoise and pink.

“But critics say the full-color, 85-square-foot video screen prevents the proposed sign from being an improvement.

“…Because the sign is on tribal land the city has no jurisdiction over it, although the Planning Commission and City Council are allowed to review the plans and make recommendations.

“…Employees at businesses near the casino said they didn’t have a problem with the proposed sign…”
