California Tribe Unveils Its Plans for Hotel, Slots Casino26 June 2001CALIFORNIA –June 26, 2001 –As reported by the (California) Business Press: "The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Mission Indians is joining the growing list of Native American tribes in California that are dramatically upgrading their gaming operations. "Pechanga tribal officials announced last week that its plans include a 521- room hotel and a 75,000-square-foot casino. The Pechanga Hotel & Casino will cost about $150 million to build and is expected to be completed by September 2002, said Butch Murphy, communications director for the Pechanga tribal government. "…The hotel and casino will be erected on a 230-acre site just north of the tribe's existing gaming facilities, which opened in July 1995, Murphy said. The casino will house all 2,000 of the tribe's Nevada-style slot machines, the most a tribe can operate under state law. It will include 53 blackjack and 13 poker tables, Murphy said. "…Some observers have speculated that California gaming tribes, particularly now that they have Vegas-style slot machines, are in an ideal position to attract gamblers and tourists away from Nevada. "…But Pechanga's new facilities aren't meant to compete with Nevada casinos or even with other local gaming operations, Murphy said. `We're looking after our own business,' he said…" |
