California Tribe Settles Suit With Investors Over Casino30 November 2001SACRAMENTO, California – Nov. 30, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: "A five-member Indian tribe in San Joaquin County settled a lawsuit with out-of-state gaming investors over an aborted casino project. "North American Sports Management Inc., a Florida company that invests in casino projects around the country, and four investors sued the Central Valley Mewuk Tribe last year for fraud after a deal to build a Tracy casino collapsed. "The group sought nearly $6 million, claiming tribal leaders defrauded them and could never get land for a casino. The tribe countersued in U.S. District Court. "The tribe – formerly the Sheep Ranch Rancheria of Mewuk Indians near Arnold – had signed a deal with investors to build a casino on almost 200 acres of traditional Mewuk land. "…The tribe is still considering a casino, but high costs have prevented it from buying land…" |
