California Tribe Plans Casino Expansion

LA JOLLA INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "California's smallest casino, a 30-machine slot arcade in a roadside mini-mart, has been closed for months and might not reopen before it is replaced with a casino 10 times bigger, the leader of the La Jolla Indian band said yesterday.

"Chairman Tracy Lee Nelson said his tribe quietly pulled the plug on the arcade around January, and the fact that hardly anyone noticed was evidence of how little business it was drawing.

"…The slot arcade opened in May 2002 to cater mostly to the tribe's 800-site campground, which is popular in summer months. But by 2003, the tribe cut the slot room hours to weekends only.

"…Nelson said the 700-member tribe has been focusing on the hotel-casino it plans to build with a Texas firm, Nevada Gold, under a partnership announced last summer. The proposed facility will have 349 slots, 12 card tables and a 75-room hotel.

"…All those issues have been resolved, Nelson said. The hotel-casino will be built on a 40-acre site where the tribal offices now sit, and the 30-year-old tribal headquarters will be replaced with a new building…"
