California Tribe Divided Over Casino Profits

24 February 2003

PECHANGA INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the Associated Press: "A rift has erupted between members of the powerful Pechanga tribe over casino profits.

"About 400 members have been accused of inserting their names illegally into the records of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians.

"The battle centers on the profits that adults receive from the tribe's $262 million casino, hotel and convention center, just southeast of Temecula in Riverside County.

"…Some tribal members have scratched family members from the official rolls.

"…Tribal members on both sides of the Pechanga dispute have accused their opponents of attempting to oust them so they can increase gaming revenue for the rest of the tribe.

"Others say the fight is about more than gambling profits. The 400 members would also lose federal health, welfare and education services if their names are scratched from the list."
