California Tribe Displays Casino Plans

SAN PASQUAL, California— Dec. 1, 2000 – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "…At a luncheon for 175 business and political guests, [San Pasqual] tribal officials displayed architects' renderings, provided aerial tours in two rented helicopters and touted the employment and economic prospects of their $180 million project, the largest of several new casinos under way in the county.

"…The Mediterranean-style resort on the Valley Center-area reservation is expected to open in 2002. Meanwhile, the tribe is building a 40,000-square-foot temporary casino to open next spring.

"…The resort is slated for 285 acres overlooking Lake Wohlford. It will have 2,000 slot machines, 65 to 75 card tables, 250 hotel rooms and seven restaurants. Its Tuscan theme includes vineyards and a winery.

"…Artists' renderings displayed yesterday depicted gambling and dining areas with elegant furnishings and Roman-style architecture. A card room was shown with a curved ceiling supported by stone pillars and arches.

"…No county supervisors attended, although at least one, Ron Roberts, sent a staff member. Supervisors have voiced concern over the size and number of tribal casinos being developed in the region…"
