California SuperLotto Plus Jackpot Rockets to $87 Million

7 August 2003

SACRAMENTO, California -- (Press Release) -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto Plus jackpot for Saturday, August 9th at $87 million. The California Lottery's jackpot is the largest in the country, even larger than multi-state games Powerball and Mega-Millions.

David Rosenberg, Chairman of the California Lottery stated, "I am very excited for Lottery players and for our schools. Why settle on being just a millionaire, when you can hope to be an eighty-seven millionaire?"

A single jackpot winner of $87 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment being $2.175 million and the 26th payment being more than $4.437 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $43.5 million or the amount the Lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner. Since public schools receive a minimum of 34% of all Lottery sales, we are happy to report that more than $55 million, from the draw sales associated with this jackpot, will be directed to California's public schools.

On February 16, 2002, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $193 million and was won by 3 winning tickets purchased in Montebello, Orange and Half Moon Bay. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million on June 23, 2001.
