California Politicians Reach Out to Tribes29 August 2003SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the California Desert Sun: "Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, wants to end limits on the number of slot machines that tribal casinos can operate on their reservations and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is willing to negotiate their end. "Right now, each tribe is limited to 2,000 slot machines. "These two candidates for governor in the recall election along with Gov. Gray Davis outlined their views Thursday for the California Nations Indian Gaming Association in a closed meeting. "…In separate interview, gubernatorial candidate Arianna Huffington said her focus on reservation casinos is to obtain tribal funds to help run the state. "…Davis unsuccessfully has tried to renegotiate state-tribal gambling agreements, known as compacts, to obtain contributions from tribes to the state in exchange for increases in slot machines…" |
