California Online, Phone Wagering Approved

25 January 2002

MONROVIA, California – Jan. 25, 2002 -- California horse racing fans can begin betting online and over the phone this weekend after state officials approved licenses for two companies.

On Thursday the California Horse Racing Board gave licenses to XpressBet, a subsidiary of Magna Entertainment Corp., which owns three California racetracks, and Television Games Network, or TVG, the only national cable and satellite television network devoted to horse racing.

Gov. Gray Davis signed a bill last summer allowing online and phone wagering beginning Jan. 1. Fans will be able to bet on races in California and in other states.
