California Mayor Renews Battle Against Card Clubs14 December 2000SAN JOSE, California -- Dec. 14, 2000 --As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle: "Citing an increase in crime related to San Jose's two main card clubs, Mayor Ron Gonzales yesterday renewed his push to shut down legalized gambling in the city. That cost, city officials say, is compounded by court and prison expenses, as well as the hard-to-quantify costs to crime victims. "...Gonzales campaigned for mayor on an anti-gambling platform, and last year persuaded the City Council to tighten up rules governing the clubs..." |
