California Lottery SuperLotto Plus Jackpot Rolls to $66 Million

5 August 2003

SACRAMENTO, California -- (Press Release) -- Lottery officials announced the SuperLotto Plus jackpot for Wednesday, August 6th at $66 million. "This jackpot is the second highest of 2003 so far and that makes it an exciting time to be in California," said Lottery Chief Deputy Director, Dennis Sequeira. He continued, "Since public schools receive 34% of all Lottery sales, and will receive more than $40 million from the draw sales associated with this jackpot!"

The California Lottery has the largest single-state jackpot in the country, bigger than Powerball and Mega-Millions. A single jackpot winner of $66 million would receive 26 annual payments with the first payment being $1.65 million and the 26th payment being more than $3.36 million before taxes. The estimated cash value would equal roughly half of the jackpot, $33 million or the amount the Lottery would invest to payout the jackpot prize over 26 years. In the event of the death of a winner, the full prize is paid to the estate of the winner.

On February 16, 2002, the largest jackpot in California Lottery history reached $193 million and was won by 3 winning tickets purchased in Montebello, Orange and Half Moon Bay. Alcario Castellano of San Jose, California made Lottery history when he became the record-breaking highest individual jackpot winner of $141 million on June 23, 2001.

SuperLotto Plus can be played at approximately 19,000 retail business establishments around California. A retailer would receive a bonus of $330,000 for selling a single winning SuperLotto Plus jackpot ticket. The SuperLotto Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
