California Group Prods Gambling Industry to Fight Addiction

CALIFORNIA –– As reported by the California Desert Sun: "A statewide group devoted to fighting gambling addiction is turning to the gaming industry for help.

"The leader of the California Council on Problem Gambling met Thursday in Sacramento with Indian gaming, Internet, lottery, race track and card club officials.

"Thomas Tucker, executive director of the Palm Springs-based California Council, said the purpose of the meeting was to try and determine how much each segment of the state's gaming industry contributes to problems associated with gambling addiction.

"…If successful, Tucker and the California Council would convince representatives of different segments of the state's gambling industry to join a `fair share' committee.

"…The committee agreed to meet monthly and lobby the Legislature to include money to fight addiction in future state budgets.

"… But building a coalition between competing sectors of the gambling industry could be difficult.

"Tucker said he is unaware of any similar movement ever undertaken in California…"
