California Governor, Tribes Rework Contracts24 March 2003CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Oakland Tribune: "Gov. Gray Davis' negotiators will meet for the first time with tribal leaders today to start reworking the compacts that allow Nevada-style casino gambling on California's Indian lands. "Davis hopes to convince tribal leaders to give the state a $1.5 billion cut of their slot machine revenues. He also hopes to get assurances they'll do more to mitigate casinos' impacts on surrounding communities. "The tribes hope to convince Davis to raise or completely lift the limit on how many highly lucrative slot machines they can operate. "…There are 109 federally recognized tribes in California, with 54 more groups seeking such recognition…" |
