California Gaming Panel Gains Support21 August 2001SACRAMENTO, California – August 21, 2001 –As reported bySan diego Union-Tribune: "All four members of California's new Gambling Control Commission appeared headed for confirmation yesterday after near-unanimous endorsements from a key Senate committee. "The votes appeared to end a persistent rumble that some of the state's powerful Indian tribes might try to take out a commissioner or two. Instead, several tribes engaged in a heated public debate over Commission Chairman John Hensley, with all but one defending him. "…Pechanga Chairman Mark Macarro, an influential tribal leader, sat down next to Hensley and accused him of pitting tribes against each other. "…Unconvinced, the Senate Rules Committee voted 3-0 to recommend Hensley's confirmation to the full Senate. The committee's three Democrats voted for his confirmation, while its two Republicans abstained. "The appointments of commissioners Michael Palmer, J.K. Sasaki and Arlo Smith were then quickly sent to the floor on 5-0 votes. "In addition to San Pasqual, the Barona and Rincon bands of San Diego County, Agua Caliente of Palm Springs and eight other tribes sent letters of support for Hensley and most of the other commissioners…" |
