California Gaming Commission Investigates Tribal Chairman

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Lompoc Record: "The Chumash Casino's gaming commission continues to deliberate on disciplinary action toward the tribe's chairman who admitted to using -- and keeping -- casino money in a blackjack game, while casino employees who allowed the action remain on leave.

"Casino public relations representative Frances Snyder said the employees were disciplined because, simply, `rules were broken.'

"…Any disciplinary action tribal chairman Vincent Armenta may face is still in question.

"…Armenta explained his action as an error in judgment and that he believed the play was being comped.

"…The incident occurred in early December as Armenta, celebrating his son's birthday, played blackjack at the Chumash Casino. The dealer allegedly supplied house chips to Armenta and his party and `pushed' the chips -- didn't take them away -- when someone in the Armenta party lost a hand. One tribal member said in a letter to other tribal members that Armenta ultimately walked out of the casino with those chips, which Snyder said amounted to about $300.

"The incident has resulted in an ordinance that prohibits elected Chumash gaming or business committee members to participate in gaming activities at the casino, Snyder said…"
