California Gaming Advances Prompt Casinos' Growth2 December 2001CALIFORNIA – Dec. 2, 2001 –As reported by the (California) Desert Sun: "A surge in Coachella Valley gambling was expected when California Indian tribes struck a deal with the state to offer Las Vegas-style slot machines and house-banked card games in tribal casinos in March 2000. "But few predicted the action to be so fast that tribes who had expanded or built new casinos in the wake of Proposition 1A would be preparing for another round of growth before the dawn of 2002. "…`It is somewhat of a surprise, a pleasant surprise,' said Richard Milanovich, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The tribe is expanding the gaming floor of its newest casino by more than a third. "So far, tribes and outside investors are capitalizing on the valley's reputation as a vacation hot spot as well as its proximity to millions of potential customers throughout the Southland. "…There is evidence the gambling market is growing beyond the borders of the Coachella Valley. "… Tribes and investors already have indicated a desire to expand from basic casinos to full-scale destination resorts…" |
