California Gambling Commission Chair Quits

1 May 2003

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the Sacramento Bee: "After more than three months of waiting in vain for the governor to appoint his replacement, state Gambling Control Commission Chairman John Hensley quietly quit Wednesday.

"Hensley's sudden departure comes 3 1/2 months after he first announced he was resigning, and about two months after he accepted a job with a San Diego-based engineering firm.

"It also comes a day after questions began surfacing about whether Hensley legally could remain on the commission while having another job.

"...During his tenure, Hensley has been the most visible and outspoken of the four commissioners.

"...SAIC, a Fortune 500 company that develops information and other technological systems, announced in February that it was making Hensley a corporate vice president.

"...But Hensley said the position was not officially confirmed until this week, that he had continued to work full time as a commissioner and that he doesn't formally start on the SAIC payroll until today.

"...The 59-year-old Hensley announced in January that he was resigning the $114,191-a-year post he was appointed to in August 2000, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family in Southern California.

"He originally set his departure date as Feb. 15 but agreed to stay on while the governor found a replacement..."
