California Extends Deadline For Tribal Slots

SACRAMENTO, California – May 15, 2001 -- As reported by the Sacramento Bee: "The California Gambling Control Commission has extended indefinitely a Tuesday deadline for tribal casinos to begin operating slot machines.

"Under gaming agreements that 62 tribes signed with Gov. Gray Davis last year, tribes feared they had to have their slot machines operating by May 15 or risk losing their gaming device licenses.

"However, commission chair John Hensley interpreted the agreement to give tribes a year to begin operating after they receive their license from the commission.

"…`There is no clock running now until the state, through the commission, starts issuing operating licenses,' [said Robert Traverso, the commission's interim executive director.]…"
