California Churches Move Against Casino Plan22 July 2003BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Associated Press: “Fearing a moral breakdown, the clergy is moving in to fight plans for an Indian casino in the city. "`Gambling doesn't put anything into the community; it only removes wealth from the community,’ the Rev. Jerry Winders said. “The Rev. Joe Green said he was floored when he got word of the casino plan, adding he feared a criminal element as well as financial and moral breakdown in the city. “The City Council has approved a development agreement with the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and BarWest development group for a 180-room hotel casino. “Green and his Barstow Christian Ministerial Association are now stepping up their campaign against the casino project…” |
