Calgary Refuses Gambling License Duties

ALBERTA – As reported by the Calgary Herald: "Alberta's new casino licensing process came under fire Tuesday from Calgary city council, which refused to be burdened with the responsibility and expense of doing what it says is the provincial government's job.

"…After much debate, council voted almost unanimously to throw the issue back at the province and demand it hold a public hearing to find out whether Calgarians want a sixth casino in their community.

"The province has received six applications for a new casino licence in Calgary, including one by the Calgary Flames, who want to put one in the Saddledome. Only one licence will be granted.

"…Council is being asked for its opinion only on the idea of another casino, not the individual applications themselves.

"…Added Ald. John Schmal: `I think the province is sucking us in pretty nice here. It's their problem, and we get the responsibility to respond and react.'

"Schmal said it costs money to discover what Calgarians think about the idea of a new casino. Since the province has the authority to grant a licence, it's the one that should pay to solicit the opinion of the community…"
