Calendar Quirk Leads to 7-Percent Decrease

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – April 11, 2001 – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: ``Chinese New Year's helped Strip casinos win more from gamblers in January, but the absence of the high-rollers' holiday in February contributed to the state's biggest year-over-year drop in monthly gaming revenue in three years, figures released Tuesday by the Gaming Control Board show.

``Nevada casinos won $698.9 million from gamblers in February, down 7 percent from the $751.6 million won in February 2000.

``The calendar was the main culprit in the February bust, Credit Suisse First Boston casino industry analyst Brian Egger said.

``Chinese New Year's was in January this year but in February last year, and because 2000 was a leap year the month had one more day than February 2001, Egger noted.

``…The Strip, home to most of the state's high-end action, was responsible for most of the state's monthly revenue drop.

``Strip casinos recorded a 12.6-percent decline in the amount they won from bettors in February, winning $337.9 million compared with February 2000's $386.8 million win…"
