Calder Race Course Announces Purse Increase

17 June 2002

MIAMI, Florida – (Press Release) -- Calder Race Course announced a purse increase that took effect with the Friday, June 14 race card. The increase affects all overnight purses.

Beginning with today's race card, all overnight purses have been increased by approximately 10 percent from a daily average of $165,000 to $182,000. When combined with stakes purses and breeders' enhancement funds, the new total average daily purse distribution will be approximately $226,000.

"We are pleased to be able to increase purses to this level so early into our meet," said Calder President Ken Dunn. "Through this past Monday, on- track business and in-state business are up 5 percent and 15 percent, respectively, over anticipated levels. Our meet has started strong and we believe that schedule changes for this year's meet should maximize our purse structure."

Calder Race Course, located on South Florida's Miami-Dade/Broward county line, offers Thoroughbred horse racing and wholecard simulcasting during two consecutive meets. The track is home of the Summit of Speed and the Festival of the Sun. A wholly owned property of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN), Calder also operates the Tropical at Calder Meet. In 2002, the Calder Meet runs from April 26 through October 25 and the Tropical at Calder Meet runs from Oct. 26 through Jan. 2, 2003.

Churchill Downs Incorporated ("CDI"), headquartered in Louisville, Ky., owns and operates world-renowned horse racing venues throughout the United States. The Company's racetracks in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky host 112 graded-stakes events and many of North America's most prestigious races, including the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, Hollywood Gold Cup and Arlington Million. CDI also owns off-track betting facilities and has interests in various television production, telecommunications and racing services companies that support CDI's network of simulcasting and racing operations.
