Caesars' Casino Plans a Surprise20 February 2004CALIFORNIA –As reported by the Fresno Bee: "A Caesars Entertainment casino in the Friant-Auberry area would attract more tourists and employees, resulting in more traffic and air pollution in a region with insufficient sewer and water systems, a Fresno County official says. "The $200 million casino -- with a 250- to 300-room hotel, more than 75,000 square feet of gaming space, 2,000 slot machines, 20 gaming tables, retail and entertainment -- would be the largest in the central San Joaquin Valley. "Fresno County Supervisor Bob Waterston, whose district includes Table Mountain and the proposed Caesars casino, said the development will be on tribal land of the Big Sandy Band of Western Mono Indians, near the intersection of Auberry and Millerton roads. "…The Mono tribe 'called me a week ago and told me about this,' Waterston said. 'I was totally shocked because this is just huge. 'I told them a week ago, 'Have you guys talked to Table Mountain? What are you going to do about water? What are you going to do about sewer?' They haven't talked to me about roads,' he added. "…But, Waterston said, the business-savvy Caesars officials should have called him. 'Caesars is going to have a huge problem with me over this.' "…Many questions about the deal remain. The fate of the Mono Wind Casino, operated by the Big Sandy Rancheria, has not been revealed. "…Dan Casas, legal counsel for Table Mountain, said he was unaware of the plans until he read about the development Wednesday in The Bee…" |
